**ISSUE 01 · NOVEMBER 3, 2026**

# World medals. Lessons for your next match.

**A note from Ken**

Welcome to **Gold Medal Wrestling News**. Each Tuesday, I want to give you something to use: a training idea, a person worth knowing, help with nutrition or the college search, and wrestling worth watching. Coaches, parents and wrestlers—this is for you.

**This week:** two World team titles • two free matches • how to reset after a loss • Doyle Trout's return • what to pack for tournament day.

I just spent the week watching and studying the World Championships! It was a fun week of wrestling! It was an awesome feeling of pride to see Team USA men and women both win the Team Championship! This is the first time both of our teams won in the same year. USA Wrestling is going strong!

I believe Trent Hidlay earned his World Championship. I strongly disagree with the video review that left him with a silver medal. He was winning and still attacking the Russian opponent with under 20 seconds left, while winning 2-1. He was awarded 2 points for the takedown to take a 4-1 lead. Upon video review, the call was reversed. I do not know if was incompetence or politics, but it was clearly robbery. This can also be a reminder I give young wrestlers: always work to finish your attacks as cleanly as possible, so you give the officials as little opportunity as possible to decide your match.

Then there is Helen Maroulis. Like Trent, Helen attended our camps many times as a young teen. Watching her progress over the past two decades has been awesome. This past week, she added another World medal and helped our women win the team championship.

**AROUND THE MAT**

## Team USA gives us plenty to celebrate

**The men's story: five golds, nine medals.** Spencer Lee, Bo Bassett, Levi Haines, Kyle Dake and Kyle Snyder won World titles in Kazakhstan. Trent earned silver; Zain Retherford, Marcus Blaze and Wyatt Hendrickson took bronze. That is a lot of American wrestlers finishing their week on the podium!

Two finals show how differently a great match can unfold. Lee scored a takedown and turned it into a series of lace-lock turns: a 10–0 win in 26 seconds. Haines had to work his way back from a halftime deficit, scoring a second-period takedown to win 4–3. One seized the opening immediately. The other stayed in the match until he could create his opportunity.

**The Pennsylvania connection is real.** Spencer, Bo, Levi, Zain and Trent all grew up wrestling in Pennsylvania. Success is contagious! Being around motivated partners and knowledgeable coaches matters. It is one reason we host nearly two weeks of our Gold Medal Training Camp System in Manheim, just outside of Lancaster.

**The women's story: a title 27 years in the making.** Our women won their first World team championship since 1999, finishing two points ahead of Japan. Everest Leydecker and Adaugo Nwachukwu won gold, Abby Nette earned silver, and Helen, Kennedy Blades, and Dymond Guilford took bronze.

Girls, these are wrestlers whose stories you should know. Parents and coaches, share this team photo with the girls in your wrestling room. They deserve to see what is possible and to have great workout partners, instruction and opportunities of their own.

## Two matches worth your time

Missed Worlds? Start here. These are full matches on FloWrestling's YouTube channel. Watch for the wrestling—and for how each athlete handles the situation in front of him.

### Trent Hidlay: earn your way to the final

[![FloWrestling video preview: Trent Hidlay against Amirhossein Firouzpour in the 2026 World semifinal](https://beehiiv-images-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/asset/file/66520213-9565-48db-a820-ae53270c19b9/maxresdefault.jpg?t=1793631115)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ0XSKMFk4k)

*Match preview: FloWrestling / YouTube.*

Trent beat Iran's Amirhossein Firouzpour 11–8 in this semifinal before his close 3–2 loss in the final. Watch the whole exchange when an attack gets defended. Young wrestlers often judge a shot only by whether it scores immediately. There is more to learn by following what happens next.

### Zain Retherford: the next match still matters

[![FloWrestling video preview: Zain Retherford against Lachlan McNeil in the 2026 World bronze-medal match](https://beehiiv-images-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/asset/file/05e859a7-c077-419b-bdf6-1a14ee214484/maxresdefault.jpg?t=1793631115)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehReUaYCLeI)

*Match preview: FloWrestling / YouTube.*

Zain shut out Canada's Lachlan McNeil 4–0 for bronze. His chance to win gold was gone, but the chance to finish with a World medal was still there. That is something every wrestler can take into a consolation bracket. Your next match deserves your best effort.

**Only have a few minutes?** [UWW's free October 31 highlight show](https://uww.org/uww-plus/videos/world-wrestling-championships-highlight-show-day-seven) runs about 12 minutes. Senior Worlds wrapped up November 1; the [official UWW YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@unitedworldwrestling) has more highlights.

**KEN'S COACHING CORNER**

## Don't wrestle your last match twice

A close loss can follow you back into the warm-up area. You replay the call, the missed shot or the points you gave up. Meanwhile, your next opponent is getting ready.

Be disappointed. Then give that disappointment a job. Here is a simple reset to work through with your coach:

1. **Name one wrestling correction.** Be specific: “I let him get to my legs without moving my feet” gives you something to fix. “I wrestled badly” does not.
2. **Choose your first action.** Decide how you want to begin the next match—a tie you know, active feet, or the setup to your best attack. Keep the plan familiar enough to use under pressure.
3. **Rehearse it before you return.** Work through that action with a partner during your warm-up. The goal is to get your attention back on wrestling.

**Parents:** you do not have to solve the whole match in the stands. Give your wrestler room to settle, then ask, “What is your plan with your coach for the next one?” Save the long review for later.

Try this after a difficult live round in practice, too. Learning to respond is part of training. Don't settle for being good when you dream of being great!

**MEET YOUR CAMP COACHES**

## Doyle Trout kept writing his wrestling story

![Ken Chertow and Doyle Trout in an archival camp photograph](https://beehiiv-images-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/asset/file/1b5adf7e-19d8-4bc9-b929-bc312d9b701a/ken-chertow-wrestling-camp-champion-doyle-trout-with-ken.jpg?t=1793631115)

*Ken and Doyle, from our camp photo collection.*

Doyle Trout grew up attending my camps annually from ages 9 to 17. He became a four-time Nebraska state champion. In April 2015, a car accident cost him his left leg above the knee. He had already committed to Wyoming. Suddenly, continuing to wrestle meant finding a way back after a life-changing injury.

He did. Doyle returned to college competition, won 21 matches for the Cowboys and graduated with a degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion. Today, he leads Midland University's men's wrestling program and was part of our 2026 camp staff.

When Midland hired him, Doyle said, “I believe being a good student will help you be a good wrestler and an overall good person.”

What an example! School is just as important as wrestling. **Be a Scholar Athlete...not a dumb jock.** Doyle kept building a future in both.

**FUEL TO WRESTLE**

## Pack for the whole tournament

Shoes, headgear, singlet—and food. You can plan a good warm-up and still arrive at your second match hungry. Pack familiar options for the morning, the gaps between bouts and the trip home.

- **3–4 hours before wrestling:** have a familiar meal with carbohydrate and moderate protein. A turkey sandwich and fruit or rice with chicken are simple options.
- **30–60 minutes before:** choose a small carbohydrate snack you tolerate well, such as a banana, applesauce or pretzels.
- **Between bouts:** check when you wrestle again. A short gap calls for a small, easy-to-digest snack; a longer break leaves room for more food and some protein. Sip fluids throughout the day.
- **When you're finished:** refuel with carbohydrate and protein. Pack something for the ride home instead of leaving recovery to chance.

**What about a protein bar?** Read the label. A bar high in fat, fiber or protein may feel heavy right before a match. Keep quick fuel and recovery food in your bag, and practice your eating routine on training days. Growing wrestlers need enough food for both training and growth.
